For all exemptions listed above, the qualifying applicant must be on the deed filed with the Henry County Tax Assessor’s Office as of January 1. Once approved, the q ualified exemption will automatically be renewed each year if the applicant continuously occupies the residence.
This is the City of Hampton’s initial Homestead Exemption offering. You must apply with the City of Hampton to receive a city homestead exemption. Henry County homestead exemption is not processed through the City of Hampton.

*General Information: An exemption can be applied on only 1 (one) homesteaded property, which means the applicant(s) must own, occupy, and claim the property as their legal residence on January 1 of the year for which application is made. A married couple is allowed Homestead exemption on only 1 (one) residence. Refinancing your mortgage or changing mortgage companies DOES NOT affect your exemption. Select only one exemption from H1, H2, H3, or H4 and additionally select Frozen Clause (H5) if desired and your property is 5-acres or less in size.
Basic Homestead: (Code H1) exemption provides a homestead exemption from the City of Hampton ad valorem taxes for municipal purposes in the amount of $15,000 of the assessed value of the homestead for City of Hampton residents.
Age Exemption:
(Code H2) exemption provides a homestead exemption from the City of Hampton ad valorem taxes for municipal purposes in the amount of $25,000 of the assessed value of the homestead for City of Hampton residents who are 62 years of age or older and under 68 years of age.
(Code H3) exemption provides a homestead exemption from the City of Hampton ad valorem taxes for municipal purposes in the amount of $50,000 of the assessed value of the homestead for City of Hampton residents who are 68 years of age or older.
(Code H4) exemption provides a homestead exemption from the City of Hampton ad valorem taxes for municipal purposes in the amount of $50,000 of the assessed value of the homestead for City of Hampton residents who are both under 65 years of age and totally disabled, documented by two doctors' letters or one doctor's letter and the Social Security award letter.
Frozen Clause Exemption (Code H5): Once your application is qualified to receive City of Hampton homestead exemption, your property value will be frozen based on the immediately preceding year’s (base value) value. If the assessed value drops below the frozen value (base year) in any year, the lower value will be realized. The base year applies to existing conditions at the time the frozen clause is filed. New improvements do not fall under this exemption.
